Rebuilding lives from the rubble

WHILE the vast majority of the world will be welcoming the peace initiative in Gaza, we need to take a moment to reflect on the tens of thousands of victims. Palestinians suffered far more, but Israelis, too, lost loved ones.

Now the real work begins. Getting unrestricted aid into Gaza must be a priority, then the massive task of rebuilding can begin, although who knows how this will be paid for. The costs are going to be astronomical and Israel is unlikely to pay voluntarily.

The parties who achieved this agreement should be praised. May peace return, may all people be safe and may there never be a repeat.

One of the clauses of the peace plan for the Middle East is faith and reconciliation talks. This is not about faith, this is about territory, self-governance and justice.

Palestine, by which I mean the whole of the territory previously inhabited by Arabs before Jewish immigration and occupation, is a shared land. The Jewish population are relative newcomers.
