'Surgeon' drilled hole in jaw so she could eat and speak
A 2,500-year-old skull has revealed a remarkable example of ancient surgical skill.
It shows a Siberian Iron Age woman survived a devastating head injury that would have left her unable to eat or speak.
Researchers discovered that two tiny holes had been expertly drilled into her jaw and threaded with an elastic material possibly horsehair or animal tendon - allowing her to open and close her mouth.
The discovery was made by scientists at Novosibirsk State University in Russia.
