Jenrick's plan for abolition of sentencing body blasted

ROBERT Jenrick's plan to scrap the Sentencing Council has been savaged as a "cynical gimmick".

In his party conference speech today, the Shadow Justice Secretary will accuse the independent body of watering down sentences and argue that ministers should have more power. It comes amid his attacks on what he claims are activist judges bringing their politics into courts.

Labour said the plan signalled "yet more rank hypocrisy" after the Tories wrecked the justice system during 14 years in power.
