THE global game of chicken between the superpowers ratcheted up another notch with Donald Trump raising tariffs on China to a staggering level.

He seemed to back down on other tariffs as he announced a 90-day pause for most countries, applying a 10% tariff instead and saying that if countries do not retaliate against the US tariffs, they will be rewarded.
