Gene therapy revolution 'cures' sickle cell agony

THE NHS is rolling out a revolutionary gene therapy that effectively cures sickle cell disease.
In people who have the agonising and potentially fatal condition, red blood cells become sickle-shaped rather than circular, causing blockages and denying flow to organs.
Some of the worst affected patients are now getting a £1.65million gene-editing treatment.
NHS chief executive Amanda Pritchard said: "This is a leap in the right direction for people with sickle cell disease, which can be an extremely debilitating and painful condition.
"This innovative, gene-editing therapy offers hope of a cure... and could be absolutely transformative.
