First undersea film of vessel that took polar explorer Scott to fate

- BY DAN WARBURTON

DOOMED polar explorer Captain Robert Scott's ship has been filmed on the ocean floor for the first time.

The Terra Nova took Scott and his four men to Antarctic for their race to reach the South Pole first, which they lost to Norwegian Roald Amundsen.

On the return journey in 1912, all five died in the freezing cold.

The Terra Nova was then used as a sealing vessel in Newfoundland before moving coal around Nova Scotia. In 1943, she sank off Greenland while carrying supplies to US bases in the Second World War. All those on board were saved.

Now, 82 years later, the wreck has been filmed on the seabed, 558ft under the waves, with its wheel, winch and mast covered in sea life but clearly visible.
