How it works and which teams can face each other

WE'VE just about got our head around the next phase of the Champions League after the inaugural 'league' stage.
UEFA bumped the tournament up to 36 teams this season, all competing in one big group. The top eight have progressed directly to the last 16, while 9-24th are competing in play-offs.
The eight teams who progress from the play-offs will meet the top eight from the league phase as the competition becomes a knockout format.
Opponents for those in the play-offs, and those already in the last 16, is dependent on where they finished in the table, as well as a UEFA draw.
Liverpool topped the league and are guaranteed to face a team placed 15-18th in the round of 16. That means a two-legged clash with either Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica, Monaco or Brest.
