Venezuela accuses US of piracy after oil tanker is seized

LAWMAKERS say the US is edging towards war with Venezuela after Donald Trump's military seized one of the country's oil tankers.

The declaration marks the biggest flashpoint yet in a confrontation that has intensified since September, when the administration began blowing up suspected drug-running vessels.

"We've just seized a tanker on the coast of Venezuela," Trump said.

"Largest one ever seized actually. And other things are happening."

Sharing footage of the operation, Attorney General Pam Bondi claimed the Skipper was part of "an illicit oil shipping network" which was supporting terrorist organisations.

Caracas erupted in anger and Nicolas Maduro's government accused the US of piracy and "blatant theft". Officials said: "The reasons for the prolonged aggression against Venezuela have finally been revealed.
