Power of minimalism in a consumer society

By removing excess and focusing on what truly matters, minimalism can provide a holistic alternative to consumer culture.

Understanding the common traps of consumer culture - where we buy more than we need - does not only make us more financially savvy, but also more mindful about what brings value to our lives. This article explores these factors and shows how minimalism can offer a solution, whilst also providing practical steps to find a healthy balance between wanting more and being content.

What is 'minimalism'?

Minimalism is the practice of removing anything non-essential, focusing on reducing possessions and commitments that aren't necessary. Its core focus revolves around intentional living: learning to live with less to make room for the things that bring you joy - from what you buy to who you spend your time with.

What are the benefits of minimalism?

Less stress

Minimalism reduces stress by promoting the ownership of fewer things. Having fewer possessions not only clears your physical space at home, but also increases mental wellbeing. With fewer items to manage, people spend less time cleaning, organising, and worrying about their belongings. Studies from the University of Utah have shown that decluttering enhances a sense of accomplishment and even increases overall happiness.

Fewer decisions

Decluttering helps by limiting your options, paving the way for more efficient decision-making. An extreme but famous example is Mark Zuckerberg, who wore the same style grey t-shirt every day to simplify his wardrobe choices. In a 2014 Q&A, Zuckerberg explained the rationale behind his controversial fashion choice, and noted how it freed up his time to focus on his work and the impact he wanted to create.
