Ukraine 'must fight for right to join Nato'

As Russia repeatedly targets Ukraine's energy infrastructure in the midst of a bitterly cold winter, the nation's president stressed the importance of his country joining the western military alliance.

In a speech to his diplomats he spoke of his hopes to finally be welcomed into Nato - helping stave off future threats from Russia.

Ukraine has repeatedly urged Nato to invite Kyiv to become a member. The Western military alliance has promised Ukraine will join its ranks one day but has not set a date or issued an invitation.
