Troops poised to evacuate Britons from Lebanon

MORE than a thousand UK troops have been put on standby to evacuate 16,000 British nationals from Lebanon as fears of an all-out war in the Middle East escalate.
Hundreds of British personnel have been drafted to RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus while hundreds more are waiting in the UK to be deployed.
The Army, RAF and Navy, including Royal Marine commandos, have been told to prepare for an operation similar to the rescue mission in Afghanistan in 2021 when the Taliban took over Kabul.
Two British naval ships and several RAF helicopters are on standby in Mediterranean.
Yesterday International Development Minister Anneliese Dodds urged British nationals in Lebanon to leave immediately.
