The good, the bad and the downright ugly

FEW people fancied Liverpool to win the Premier League title in Arne Slot's first year at the helm. But the Dutchman handled with ease the unenviable task of slipping into Jurgen Klopp's sizeable shoes to make history at the expense of Arsenal, who had to make do with the runners-up spot for a third successive year.

- JOHN CROSS

Then there was the nerve-jangling Champions League fight. After a frenetic final day Manchester City, Chelsea and Newcastle booked their spots at Europe's top table. Aston Villa will feel aggrieved after a controversial refereeing decision cost them dearly at Manchester United. They had to console themselves with a place in the Europa League.

Things at the bottom have been decided for months. The three who came up went straight back down to the Championship. Leicester, Southampton and Ipswich struggled to put up much of a fight.

We have had some shining lights, as we always do, in England's top flight. Some have come out of nowhere, others have been as brilliant as usual. Equally, we have had individuals who have massively underwhelmed. Our reporters pick their best and worst of the 2024-25 Premier League campaign.

JOHN CROSS

Best manager: Arne Slot

Come on, who gave him a shot? To go into a mega club, following a legend, and win the title by a country mile. What a story!

Worst manager: Ruben Amorim

I am sick and tired of managers saying they will stick to their principles. What? At the expense of results? If the Manchester United head coach does not have the players for his formation, then change. It is a weakness and inflexibility.

Best player: Mo Salah

Goals, assists and highlights. I love the way he has taken his game to new levels. He has lit up the Premier League.

Best breakthrough season: Dean Huijsen

I love the defender and it also allows me to give a big hat tip to Bournemouth for a terrific season. Bought for a modest price, sold to Real Madrid for £50million. What a campaign!
