Tender twist in dog's tail

My two-year-old male crossbreed dog caught the tip of his tail in a door. Treatment has failed because he simply won't leave the tail alone. Our vet has advised partial amputation because the tip is granulating, with loss of skin making healing almost impossible. Have you experience of this?

This is a frustrating problem and I have seen my fair share of damaged tails that were difficult to heal. Dogs can mutilate the tips of their tails for a variety of reasons, including behavioural problems.
