Starmer reeling after WhatsApp furore sees second MP suspended
Daily Express
|February 11, 2025
SIR Keir Starmer was scrambling yesterday to contain the fallout from the growing WhatsApp messages scandal which has already claimed the scalps of two Labour MPs.
Oliver Ryan, who represents Burnley, was told last night by the Chief Whip he has been suspended.
Andrew Gwynne was suspended as both a minister and Labour MP on Saturday night, after leaked WhatsApp messages revealed he had sent offensive jokes about colleagues and constituents.
Investigation
A party spokesman said: "As part of our WhatsApp group investigation, Oliver Ryan has been suspended as a member of the Labour Party.
"As soon as this group was brought to our attention, a thorough investigation was immediately launched and this process is ongoing in line with the Labour Party's rules and procedures.
"Swift action will always be taken where individuals are found to have breached the high standards expected of them as Labour Party members." While Mr Ryan did not comment on his suspension, in a statement on Sunday he apologised for not calling out the offensive messages.
