THE King and Queen were given a warm welcome to St Asaph Cathedral in North Wales yesterday as he handed out purses of money in the traditional Maundy service.
It was only the second time the annual event has been staged in Wales in 800 years — it was first held in St Davids in 1982.
Charles, in a morning suit, and Camilla, in a navy dress and coat by Christian Dior, were greeted by well-wishers while a small group of republican protesters waved yellow flags. Anti-monarchy graffiti reading Not Our King in large red capitals that had been sprayed on a cathedral wall was covered by a sheet.
By choosing to attend the service in Wales, the King continued a custom started by his late mother.
