Roadblocks in the way of switch to electric vehicles

DRIVERS are willing to switch to electric cars but inadequate numbers of charging stations and rocketing costs are hampering take-up, campaigners warn.

Government plans to review green policies to avoid heaping costs on consumers has put demand for ÉVs into sharp focus.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak this week cast doubt on the Tories' pledge to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030. Sales of hybrids will be stopped from 2035.

There are concerns achieving this within seven years is impractical and expensive.

Currently, the cheapest EV on sale in the UK with a decent mileage range could set motorists back more than £30,000.

Range is less of a problem than it was, with many new EVs having the capacity to go 200 miles on one battery charge - but where and how to plug in is still a big issue.
