Reeves' 50,000 staff cull 'should go deeper'

ONE in 10 civil servants faces the axe when Rachel Reeves makes 50,000 jobs redundant in her cost-cutting Spending Review on June 11.

But the number of Whitehall staff has shot up so rapidly that there will still be tens of thousands more civil servants than a decade ago.

Think tank Policy Exchange urged the Chancellor to go further, and save £5billion by axing unnecessary roles.

There are just over 500,000 civil servants, including those working for government agencies and non-departmental bodies as well as in central government.

Ms Reeves is understood to be aiming to cut numbers by 50,000 as part of a spending review that will include cuts to the Home Office and Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs.
