Predatory marriage fears

INHERITANCES are a financial lifeline for millions of families, but many risk missing out due to a rise in so-called “predatory marriages”.

- By Harvey Jones

These relationships, often between younger people and older, vulnerable partners, are raising alarm bells among legal experts.

The Law Commission is considering updating laws on wills in England and Wales to counter the threat. In the meantime, families remain vulnerable.

Today, when someone marries, their existing will is automatically revoked. Unless they make a new one, their new spouse stands to inherit everything, leaving children and other family members with nothing.

Justice Minister Sarah Sackman said marriage should no longer automatically revoke a will.

“This recommendation is designed to address the problem of predatory marriages,” she said.

Campaigners and lawyers report seeing more cases of vulnerable older adults being groomed into unions they do not fully understand.
