Thousands of men will benefit from cutting-edge 'blasts'
THOUSANDS of men living with prostate cancer are to be offered high-precision NHS radiotherapy to prevent the disease spreading.
Highly targeted stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) is being made available for the first time to patients with early-stage prostate cancer.
The pioneering treatment blasts tumours with a large dose of radiation, killing cancer cells with pinpoint accuracy while sparing healthy tissue.
It targets a tumour from many different directions to help reduce the risk of cancer spreading or returning.
SABR has proven more effective with fewer sessions than conventional radiotherapy. Patients typically need five doses in a fortnight, rather than at least 20 for standard radiotherapy.
Chief executive Sir Jim Mackey is set to reveal the expansion today at an NHS conference in Manchester.
