A GLIDER pilot died when a midair crash during a competition sent his aircraft plummeting 2,500ft to the ground, an inquest heard.

Philip Dolan, 67, had been circling in an upward current of warm air with other gliders when he collided with one whose wing cut off his tail.

The retired engineer's aircraft went into a barrel roll and plunged to the ground nose-first.
