Packed tourist plane was just 20 minutes from running out of fuel

A PLANE heading for Britain with nearly 300 passengers on board came within 20 minutes of running out of fuel, it was revealed yesterday.
The TUI flight was put in a holding queue at its destination airport before diverting and aborting a landing due to high winds, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch found.
It finally touched down at Birmingham with 20 minutes of fuel in the tank. Commercial flights usually carry at least an hour's worth of extra fuel, which is often increased depending on the circumstances.
In this case the commander of Flight TOM173 from Cancun, Mexico, to Manchester loaded 15 minutes of extra fuel after studying the weather.
Crew had been informed of strong winds in England but believed they would dissipate at around 6 am, with the Boeing 787 due to land at 7.35 am.
