A MAN aged 76 is one of the first Britons to have been fitted with a pacemaker the size of a pen lid, with a super battery that can last up to 20 years.
The new Aveir VR leadless pacemaker was placed in the chest of Graham Motteram by heart experts at University Hospital Southampton, during a 30-minute procedure.
Implanted in the heart's right ventricle, the 1.5-inch device corrects its rhythms using electrical pulses.
Retired contract manager Graham, from Romsey, Hampshire, was chosen after a routine check-up for diabetes found he had high blood pressure.
