A FORMER Royal Marine appeared in court yesterday accused of using his car "as a weapon" as he "deliberately" drove into a crowd of Liverpool fans, leaving 79 injured.

- Chris Riches

Paul Doyle, 53, faced seven charges including wounding with intent, causing grievous bodily harm with intent, attempting to cause GBH with intent and dangerous driving.

They relate to six alleged victims, including two children aged 11 and 17. The youngest of those injured in Liverpool city centre on Monday is nine and the eldest 78. Seven remain stable in hospital.

Doyle appeared first at the city's Magistrates' Court and fast-tracked to Crown Court where more serious offences are dealt with.

Remanded

The father of three will next appear for a plea hearing on August 14. Judge Andrew Menary KC set a provisional trial date for November 24, with an estimated length of up to four weeks.
