AN Army widow has blasted plans for an inheritance tax on death-in-service payments to bereaved military families.

Under the Labour plans, the lump sums paid out to the families of those who die while serving, could be taxed by as much as 40% from April 2027 if the person was not married or in a civil partnership at the time of their death.

Jilly Carrell lost husband Col Nick Carrell, 52, father to her two daughters, in 2021 to brain cancer while he was still serving.

The mum, who runs an organisation to help bereaved military families, called the proposed changes "a betrayal to those who have already given so much".
