Jenrick: Tories need hard truths over election defeat

ROBERT Jenrick stormed to a joint lead in the Tory leadership race yesterday, with a notes-free speech vowing to tell his party "hard truths".

As he launched his campaign in home town Newark, Notts, the former immigration minister said he would prioritise migration and hoped to revive deportations to Rwanda.

Surrounded by MP backers including Esther McVey, who introduced him, Mr Jenrick said he would tell Tories why they suffered their worst electoral defeat not least because they broke their promise of controlled and reduced migration.

Pointing to his Cabinet resignation last year, he said: "I was not willing to be just another minister who makes and breaks promises on immigration."
