THE King and Queen were overcome with emotion at commemorations for the 80th anniversary of D-Day as Charles paid tribute to the "courage, resilience and solidarity" of veterans.

Camilla was moved to tears as one hero recounted the horror of losing his best friend on the beaches of Normandy as the Allied invasion of Europe began.

Charles also welled up at the climax of the memorial event that paid tribute to the young men and women who sacrificed their lives.

The royal couple were joined by the Prince of Wales, politicians, veterans and their families in Portsmouth, which served as a major base for the historic assault.

Former Royal Navy serviceman Eric Bateman, 98, was given a standing ovation as he came to the stage accompanied by his two great-granddaughters.
