Former boss believes nurse 1s innocent of baby killings

LUCY Letby's former manager believes she is innocent and says the ex-nurse was genuinely "shocked and bewildered" by the allegations of baby killings.

Karen Rees, the former head of nursing at the Countess of Chester hospital, said that if Letby - serving 15 whole-life orders was acting "she deserves an Oscar because she was so convincing".

She first met Letby to tell her she was being removed from the neonatal ward over concerns of an abnormal mortality rate in 2016.

Over two years of investigations into the deaths of the infants, she was tasked with supporting the former nurse and is now convinced she is innocent of the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of seven more following her conviction in 2023.

Ms Rees said: "What I saw was a very frightened young woman who was shocked and bewildered." At their first meeting, she told Letby: "I've been given a management instruction that I have to remove you from your clinical practice.
