BEACH Boys legend Brian Wilson, one of the 20th century’s most influential composers and musicians, died yesterday aged 82.

- By Matt Nixson and Christopher Bucktin

The loss of the troubled genius — who created such soaring masterpieces as Good Vibrations, California Girls and The Warmth of the Sun — marks the end of an era of all-American songs about beaches, cars and girls that resonated around the world.

Brian’s family confirmed his death in a statement on his website: “We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away. We are at a loss for words right now.”

Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood wrote on X last night: “Oh no Brian Wilson and Sly Stone in one week - my world is in mourning, so sad.” Monkees drummer Micky Dolenz posted: “Brian Wilson was a musical and spiritual giant. His melodies shaped generations.”

John Cusack, who played Wilson in 2014 biopic Love & Mercy, posted: “The maestro has passed — the man was an open heart with two legs - with an ear that heard the angels. Quite literally. Love and Mercy for you and yours tonight.”

Fleetwood Mac drummer Mick Fleetwood wrote: “Anyone with a musical bone in their body must be grateful for Brian Wilson’s genius magical touch !! And greatly saddened of this major worldly loss!!”

Singer Nancy Sinatra added: “His cherished music will live forever as he travels through the Universe and beyond. God bless you, sweet Brian.”

Born in 1942 in Inglewood, California, Brian Douglas Wilson was the eldest and last surviving of three sons raised by a harsh and abusive father, Murry. A teenage virtuoso, music became his escape.

Fascinated by US quartet, The Four Freshmen, and later Phil Spector's “Wall of Sound” production technique, Wilson began writing songs with cousin Mike Love.
