Future generations must cherish lesson of VE Day

AS the Red Arrows soared overhead to commemorate the 80th anniversary celebrations of VE Day, a shiver of emotion ran through the crowds.

The great ceremony to mark the end of the Second World War was the kind of theatre that the British do extremely well and began in style with the chimes of Big Ben striking noon and actor Timothy Spall reading the rallying, vital words of Sir Winston Churchill: “My dear friends, this is your hour. This is not victory of a party or of any class. It’s a victory of the Great British nation as a whole.”
