Clare Balding's tribute as royal racehorse trainer dad dies at 87

Elizabeth II with Ian Balding at Sandown in 2005

Clare Balding has paid tribute to her “one of a kind” racehorse trainer father Ian, who has died aged 87.He trained for some of racing’s most famous owners, including Elizabeth II and the Queen Mother, but was best known for preparing 1971 Derby winner Mill Reef.

Passing his licence to son Andrew, he retired from training in 2002. Clare was a leading amateur rider before her TV work.

She posted photos of her father online and wrote: "My Dad was one of a kind. Fearless, funny and charming he was an all-round sportsman, a great trainer and a beautiful horseman.

"He loved his dogs, his horses and his family - probably in that order.

"He shared with me his passion for sport and taught me to be brave enough to chase a dream, even if it seemed impossible. We'll miss him so much."
