MILLIONS of people suffered Easter travel misery on the roads, railways, ferries and at airports.

Heavy traffic combined with strike action and wet weather created a series of snarl-ups for families heading away for the long weekend.

The Port of Dover in Kent said it was taking up to 90 minutes for departing passengers to pass through border checks.

National Highways shelved more than 1,000 miles of roadworks in a bid to keep motorways and major carriageways clear.

The AA estimated nearly 20 million people were on the roads.

And a crash on the M1 in Hertfordshire led to delays of up to an hour and five miles of congestion.

Two of four lanes were closed on the motorway northbound between junction eight at Hemel Hempstead and junction nine at Redbourn.
