With an estimated 1.6 million Brits on some form of weight-loss jab, dietitian ZOE GRIFFITHS shares seven pieces of advice for anyone thinking of trying them
-
If you're considering weight-loss medication, understanding how it works and what to look out for matters. Here are seven key points everyone should know before beginning treatment.
Weight-loss medication is not “cheating”: One of the biggest barriers is the belief using medication is somehow “cheating” or a failure of willpower. This simply isn't true. Obesity is a complex medical condition with strong biological drivers, including hormones, genetics and the way our brains regulate appetite and weight.
Weight gain is not about laziness or lack of discipline - it’s about biology, psychology and environments engineered to make weight gain easy. Medications work by addressing these, helping to reduce hunger, improve fullness and make healthier choices achievable. Seeing treatment as a valid option, rather than a last resort, can be a powerful step in breaking down internalised stigma and getting the support you deserve. It's not your fault, and using medication is a credible way to improve health.
