OVER £30 million will be injected into the West Midlands to assist in establishing safer cycling and walking pathways throughout the region.

Active Travel England has granted £36,009,295 to the West Midlands Combined Authority to construct additional routes and implement programmes such as School Streets and Bikeability to motivate more residents to cycle and walk as part of their daily commutes.

The authority received the second highest achievable 'capability rating' of three, which assesses its capacity to organise, plan and execute active travel initiatives. It remains the sole authority in the broader West Midlands to attain this score.

West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker stated he has positioned boosting active travel as a central element of his 'Journeys for Everyone' priority and the upcoming Local Transport Plan.
