Straight and steady in the sun

AS ONE would expect, the process of keeping the nation fed never stops, which seems to sum up life here on the farm.

Having just completed our second cut of silage, it doesn’t seem that long since we were doing the first and now we are setting our sights on the next cut. This last silage cut was better than anticipated and the pea and oat cover crop was incredible at over 4ft high. It certainly added considerable bulk to the clamp.
My role during silaging is on the rake. I enjoy this job, seeing a field of straight rows of mown grass and all without the aid of GPS. If there is kink in any row, it is probably where I was trying to open my lunch box! I must admit that eight hours on a tractor seat, steering with the left hand, controls with the right and without the ability to swap over, leaves some aching muscles. Fortunately, like most self-employed people, we don’t get RSI.
