Closure of more primary schools moves step closer

Formal consultation periods are now active as Carmarthenshire Council aims to gather people’s views on reconfiguring primary school provision across the county as part of the Modernising Education Programme (MEP).

The proposals include the closure of Ysgol Meidrim, three miles north of St Clears, and Ysgol y Fro in Llangyndeyrn, five miles south of Carmarthen.

Proposals were backed by senior council leaders late last year, with cabinet members agreeing to publish a statutory notice to close Ysgol Llansteffan, eight miles south of Carmarthen, and to launch consultations concerning Ysgol y Fro, which had 15 pupils as of 2025, and Ysgol Meidrim, which had 31.
