Time to Retire the Word 'Handicapped' A Call for Inclusive Language in Governance and Society

One such word that urgently needs to be retired from official and public usage is "handicapped". (Vikalangulu in Telugu) Despite widespread recognition that this term is outdated and insensitive, it continues to appear in various ways, communications and government forms.

The Problem

In a country committed to equality and dignity for all, it is disheartening to see official documents still bearing labels such as:

"Handicapped Welfare Department"

"Application Form for Handicapped Pension"

"Handicapped Parking Permit"

"Handicapped Certificate Issuance Form"

"Reservation for Handicapped Persons" in job portals or educational admission forms

"Special Coaching Scheme for Handicapped Students" (as seen in some UGC or State scholarship forms)

These terms are not only outdated but also hurtful and limiting. They reduce a person's identity to a deficiency rather than emphasizing their strengths, potential, or individuality.
