Daughters: Not an inheritance, but the truth of sentiment

For centuries, the Indian society has had the notion that only a son carries the lineage, only a son will carry the bier, only a son will inherit the property.

This thinking not only pushes daughters to a second cl-ass status, but also hurts human sensibilities. But time has repeatedly proved that lineage is not just a name, lineage is a sentiment that anyone can carry forward. There are so many daughters who serve their old parents, support them and fulfill their last wish.

Today, when joint families are breaking up, when sons are busy with their careers in big cities, daughters are staying with their parents and providing them mental, emotional and sometimes even financial support.

Why do tears have the same effect?

When sorrow comes to a home, tears do not see any relationship, gender or cl-ass. A mother's love and a daughter's affection-both have the same language of pain. Death is such a reality that brings everyone under one umbrella. At that moment, neither a son is big nor a daughter is small. At that moment, there is only a human being-dedicated, emotional, broken.

In our society, the post-death rituals are the responsibility of the son. But is it right to impose emotional responsibility on only one gender? When the daughter also suffers the same pain, sheds the same tears, then why is she less entitled?

Changing social equations

Today's India is going through a transitional period, where daughters are being educated, made self-reliant, but the change in mindset is still incomplete. There is the slogan of 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao', but are we able to give equal status to daughters in every right of life? Are they getting equal status in property, tradition and decisions?

Not just education, daughters also need property rights, participation in family decisions and social respect. This change will not come only from laws, but from thoughts.
