WHETHER one approves or disapproves of the manner in which KwaZulu-Natal Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has exposed allegations of corruption in the high echelons of the police, there can be no doubt that his lancing of the boil will force the powers that be to deal decisively and directly with the crisis.

Many have praised Mkhwanazi for his “brave” and “refreshing” action, breaking ranks and speaking out against powerful politicians and business people. On the other hand, some saw his actions as reckless, “unlawful”, unprocedural and unwise, some going as far as to say they spelled the end of his career in the police. But there have also been more guarded and balanced views with some calling for proper due diligence, a thorough but quick probe followed quickly by decisive action.
