THE draw for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, conducted on Wednesday, has presented the Springboks with a seemingly straightforward path through the pool stages.

As defending back-to-back champions and the top seed, the Boks have been placed in Pool B alongside Italy, Georgia and Romania.
On the surface, this is a favourable draw, especially after encountering tough pool matches in the previous two editions, where they lost to the All Blacks in 2019 and Ireland in 2023 before regrouping and going on to lift the golden Webb Ellis trophy.
But the Boks won't take any opposition for granted. They have been stung by pool-stage surprises before — the 2015 tournament being the most enduring lesson, when Heyneke Meyer’s team were humbled by Japan.
