THE horrific bloodbath at an illegal tavern in Saulsville Hostel, west of Pretoria, which stole 12 lives including three defenceless children, is not an isolated tragedy.

It is a screaming siren announcing our national surrender.South Africa is not at war, yet we suffer the daily casualties of one. The primary weapon in this undeclared conflict is the illegal firearm, and its proliferation is a testament to our failing state. When a nation not in armed conflict rivals actual conflict zones in the frequency of gun violence, it is time for a radical and immediate intervention. The Saulsville massacre is irrefutable proof that we are losing the war against violent crime, and the government must now wage a total, uncompromising war on the instruments that enable it.
