This alarming trend, highlighted by unpublished government data, shows that vulnerable populations, particularly pregnant women, infants, and young adults, are experiencing the brunt of this funding shortfall.
With approximately 8 million South Africans living with HIV constituting one in five adults — the nation holds the world's highest concentration of the virus. Until the early months of 2023, the US contributed around 17% to South Africa's total HIV budget. However, following major cuts instituted by President Donald Trump, this support has dwindled, raising concerns amongst health professionals and advocacy groups alike.
