Chinese modernisation: a new model for development
Cape Times
|June 26, 2025
We have not followed the outdated pattern of 'pollute first, treat later'
MODERNISATION has been a common theme in the development of countries worldwide since the 20th century. Today, our world, our times, and history are undergoing unprecedented changes. The world has once again reached a crossroads in history. As we stand at the crossroads, we must ask a fundamental question: Where should modernisation lead?
China, a civilisation of 1.4 billion people, has spent over a century exploring a new answer: Chinese Modernisation. It isn't a mere imitation of the Western model, but a unique road rooted in Chinese civilisation and attuned to contemporary needs. There are three key questions mostly asked: What is Chinese Modernisation? Where does it come from? And what will it bring to Africa and the rest of the world?
Decoding Chinese Modernisation: A New Practice Beyond Traditional Paradigms
When we think of modernisation, many envision the Western path that emerged from the Industrial Revolution. Yet, China's approach is distinct, defined by what we call "Chinese coordinates" from the outset.
A Grand Experiment Involving a Massive Population: Bringing 1.4 billion people into modernisation is a great challenge. This requires us to manage ultra-large markets and govern highly complex systems across 9.6 million square kilometres, a feat comparable to scaling the "Mount Everest of human development history."
A Value Revolution of Common Prosperity: We reject the cycle where "the rich get richer, and the poor stay poor". Consider the poverty alleviation miracle in Yunnan's Nujiang Gorge: villagers who once crossed rivers by zipline now live in photovoltaic-powered new villages. This is China's commitment to "leave no one behind."
