A journey to the fairest Cape: memories of SA

SIR Francis Drake was not wrong when he said that The Cape is the “fairest Cape in all the Circumference of the World.” I think I’m dreaming, sure it’s a paradise here, I’ve never seen anything so beautiful in all my life. “Ma, Ma, would yeh look.” Just magnificent.

- ANNE LAPEDUS BREST

When I opened my eyes on the 2nd Feb 1961 and looked out of the porthole window, and saw Table mountain I couldn't believe my eyes. It is the most beautiful mountain I have ever seen. Little boats out on the harbour all bobbing up and down, and behind them is Table mountain looking down on this beautiful scene.

Our South African Yodaiken and Sakinofsky cousins are at the docks. Great excitement and we are whisked off to the Sakinofsky home in Tamboerskloof. It’s a wonderful day, blue skies, not a cloud, and I remember the grapevines all over the garden. The family can't believe Robert and I have such “rosy cheeks” as they called it. Later we drive over Chapman's Peak Drive, and as the car twists and turns, we don't know where to look first.
