What a racquet: Djokovic eases through as Gauff recovers
Cape Argus
|May 28, 2025
NOVAK Djokovic got his bid for a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title off to a solid start on Tuesday, as the Serbian defeated Mackenzie McDonald 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the French Open.
-
Fresh from claiming his 100th tour title in Geneva last weekend, Djokovic booked his place in the last 64 at Roland Garros with a comfortable straight-sets victory over the 98th-ranked American in under two hours. The only blemish for the 38-year-old sixth seed came when he failed to serve out the second set at 5-2, but he swiftly corrected the lapse by breaking McDonald to love in the following game.
The three-time Roland Garros champion will next face the winner of the all-French clash between Corentin Moutet and Clément Tabur in the second round. Meanwhile, Coco Gauff may have forgotten her racquets when she arrived on court for her opener on Tuesday, but the American still powered into the second round.
