Hundreds of learners compete in skills contest

The Western Cape Education Department' Provincial Skills Competition recently drew record participation at Bellville Technical High School.
The department hosted its largest-ever Provincial Skills Competition. Over two days, 400 learners and 70 teachers competed in 18 disciplines, a significant expansion from 50 learners in two subjects in 2018.
The competition now includes practical subjects beyond technical fields, such as Consumer Studies, Tourism, and Music.
Western Cape Minister of Education David Maynier praised the talent and highlighted the initiative’s role in fostering economic growth through technical skills.
The competition started in 2018 with just 50 learners participating in two technical subjects.
WCED spokesperson, Bronagh Hammond, said it was originally focused on promoting technical and vocational subjects, such as construction, welding, and electrical, automotive and metal work.
She explained that the competition has expanded to include a broader spectrum of practical, skills-based subjects.
