Crisis as over 117 000 girls gave birth in 2024/25

DURING an Indaba on Adolescent Pregnancy, Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Andries Nel revealed that in the period 2024/25, 117,195 girls aged 10-19 gave birth and emphasized the importance of children knowing they cannot legally give consent to sex at the age of 12.
Earlier this year, The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness revealed that children as young as 11 years old are finding themselves in their maternity wards while the Education Department confirmed their school drop out numbers were largely due to teen pregnancies.
Shocking statistics were released this week to the Cape Argus, where the Department of Health and Wellness said that over the past three financial years, adolescent deliveries have risen by 26.66%, highlighting the ongoing challenges in addressing teenage pregnancies despite existing interventions.
