Circumstances still under investigation

THE murder of DA councillor in Stellenbosch, Xolile Kalipa, has others living in fear they could be next in the small town.

Kalipa, a PR councillor and mayco member for Community Services in Stellenbosch, was brutally gunned down on Sunday in Kayamandi.

Police spokesperson, Wesley Twigg, said detectives are investigating the murder.

"The circumstances surrounding a shooting incident on Sunday, May 4, at about 9:26pm in Kayamandi, Swart Street, where a 54-year-old male was shot and fatally wounded, are under investigation.

"Stellenbosch police responded to a complaint of a shooting and upon arrival on the scene they found the victim with gunshot wounds to his chest.

"The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.

"The motive for the attack forms part of the police investigation. The suspect/s fled the scene and are yet to be arrested," said Twigg.

The DA in the Western Cape released a statement condemning the murder and urged police to act swiftly to arrest the suspects.

"Xolile was known as a gentle, true servant of the people, who worked tirelessly to uphold the DA's values and championed the residents he served.
