WHAT can one possibly say about a book that's barely 40 pages long? Quite a lot, it turns out, Abraham Verghese's Abscond is slim in size but surprisingly weighty in spirit.
Set in a New Jersey summer of 1967, Abscond follows 13-year-old Ravi Ramanathan, a budding tennis prodigy who dreams of Wimbledon glory while his mother quietly hopes he'll one day become a doctor like his father.
His parents are loving but firm, bound by the traditions of their Indian heritage and their own ambitions for their only child.
