MINISTER VOICES CONCERN OVER RECRUITMENT CRISIS

WALES’ education secretary has admitted she is ‘really worried’ about a key issue for schools which is also one of the Welsh Government's policy priorities.
Numbers of Welsh-medium teachers are stagnant, with an overall crisis in teacher recruitment and retention in Wales, data shows.
Quizzed on what was being done to address the problem, Lynne Neagle MS told the Senedd’s Children, Young People and Education Committee that millions of pounds are being spent on encouraging teenagers to study Welsh at A Level, as well as to incentivise students to go into teacher training for the Welsh-medium sector.
Latest Welsh Government data shows 396 Welsh-speaking teachers trained in 2022-23 and 395 left the profession that year.
