THREE years after a disastrous oil spill that affected the Verde Island Passage (VIP), fishermen’s groups, academe, environmental advocates, and government officials said justice remains elusive for the affected communities.

- JONATHAN L. MAYUGA

To commemorate the tragic incident, the group came together at disaster’s Ground Zero in Mindoro, to call for justice, and the immediate rehabilitation and long-term protection of the marine corridor.

“Today, we stand not only to remember the devastation that befell the VIP and its communities, but to continue in calling for justice that delivers fair compensation to those affected and holds the corporations responsible accountable for the damages inflicted upon the marine ecosystem of the VIP and the communities relying on it,” Fr. Edwin Gariguez, lead convener of the group Protect VIP said.

Accounts from affected fishermen reveal that they are still awaiting compensation.
